It's a funny thing about those smothered verbs if one worked for a newspaper. Reporters with a 500 word story to write would regularly smother a verb whereas the copy editor with an eight column inch hole in which to cram that story (to cram that story into?) would unsmother the verb to save space (or because said copy editor realized said reporter was not being concise). But these are some very good tips.
